Posh Paper, wedding invitations in Cincinnati!

Today I would like to share a recent interview with Kathy from Posh Paper!

Tell us a bit about yourself and your company.

I am Kathy Stout, owner and founder of Posh Paper, located in the heart of the Reading Bridal District. I am a former marketing executive of 25 years. I started Posh Paper in 2015 and have had my retail shop since 2019. I named my company something that was inclusive of any type of paper because I had dreams of opening a stationery shop. We now sell retail and wholesale greeting cards and notecards, and have a line of pet cards called Posh Pet, and are sold in Pet Wants and other retailers in Cincinnati and Kentucky, and across the country. I also have owned KMS Marketing & Design, my own graphic design and marketing company, since 2008, offering packaging design, logo and website design and marketing/PR services, such as social media and press release writing, etc. We keep busy!

How did you get into wedding stationery?

In the 90s and early 2000s, I had a floral wedding business called Flowers by Design for 15 years out of my home in Columbus, Ohio and worked part-time for an all-exclusive wedding shop that offered everything for your wedding in one location — photography, dresses, tux rental, cakes, flowers, invitations, jewelry and more. Back then, there were a lot of the all-inclusive wedding shops – two in our area. I also had a full–time job in corporate marketing – whew! I learned so much about the retail side of flowers for weddings, and wedding planning in general. I drove a van on the weekends to deliver the flowers to different locations, set up the cake and flowers and decorated the venue, etc. It’s exhausting just thinking about it now! My first introduction to invitations was when the owner closed her business and I bought five invitation albums for $50. I sat at my kitchen table and went through the albums with brides and wrote up the orders. It was so simple and a great complement to my floral business.

If I look back on everything I have ever done for my career, flowers are definitely my favorite. The sheer joy I had watching my brides go down the aisle with my bouquets and seeing it all come together on the wedding day does not compare to anything I have done yet. I closed that business when I had our son in 2001 and it got too labor intensive as I was getting older. In 2015, I decided to launch my own wedding stationery company and have been loving it ever since.


What is your favorite part of the wedding stationery business?

I would have to say providing a service to people that brings them joy and happiness. I love that I can give back in some way and it’s a positive, happy experience that puts a smile on people’s faces and mine. I also love graphic design and when I get to collaborate with brides and grooms with custom work. I get very excited when I do a little extra embellishment like foil or letterpress. It’s like Christmas when I receive the finished product and open the box for the first time to see the beautiful designs.

What’s the best invitation design you can recall?

There are so many, it’s hard to pinpoint one, but I would say recently we did a hand-painting of a beautiful mansion in Charleston, SC that was the venue for the wedding, and did letterpress typography. It turned out amazing and they were overjoyed with the finished invitation suite. We are so excited to offer hand-painted watercolor artwork and wedding crests where brides and grooms can have something that is unique to them and memorable.

What’s the biggest lesson you’ve learned, and would pass along to other new wedding stationery companies just getting started?

I would have to say allowing yourself to fail. There is so much to learn in this business and I still keep learning every day. There have been so many setbacks, it’s hard to count, but each one has caused me to continue to grow and get where I am today. It is hard work, harder than I’ve ever done, but I keep pressing on and discovering new ways to design invitations and stationery, market and expand my business by being proactive and seeking education and making connections with other stationers and vendors in the industry. I would also say keep reinventing your business and try new marketing tactics to see what works best. My business is completely different than when it started five years ago, and that’s what makes it exciting!
