What is something you love about weddings?
For me I love the union of the wedding and the actual joining of the couple. I love when couples focus on the magic of the actual commitment.
What advice to have for couples planning their design of their event?
Dream, even though you may think I could never have this dream and then let’s design that look you want to have.
Tell us a bit about yourself and your company.
Chrissy Lane was a dream of mine. You see, a long time ago in a galaxy far away I had a grandma who named me Chrissy Lane. My real name is Christy Kerley, but that is for another day. So the name stuck with me. It was my nickname to say or just a part of me. And I love having a brand, as I like to say, that represents the whole of me. I love to create, from paper to wood and all things in between. And I make things that you only dream about. I love to bring the vision to life and make it happen. In 2009 when i started this adventure i worked from my home creating invitations and cards for a small company named Blue Mountain Arts. I sold my designs in 2011 to them and started my own passion of creating art from paper and started making paper flowers. It was at first just fun. Then one day a friend shared them on social media and well from there it was history. In 2014 I won Martha Stewart’s American Made contest for decor/ floral art media and got to shake her hand for 23 seconds. And it was the most exciting 23 seconds of my life. From there I started expanding into weddings and found my passion – creating things for brides that they only dreamed about, creating their vision and dream and making it come to life.
What is your favorite part of the wedding day?
For me the favorite part is simply the unity of the couple and also the moment they see what we created for them. Oftentimes the items we create truly become what they imagined and it is so exciting to see their reaction. I really love to get creative with their seating charts, welcome signs, guestbooks and sweetheart table areas. To create that special touch that is them as a couple. One of my favorite designs is coming up for two scientists who are literally creating a DNA seating chart where each letter of the guest is on the DNA strand from beginning to end. Imagine that piece of art in your home afterward! They are also using it as their guestbook where guests will be able to sign the “strand between the molecules leaving a piece of them in the couples DNA.
What’s the best thing you ever ate at a wedding?
I am a CAKE girl i love me some cake and frosting. I mean it is really why I am there.
What is your dream location to design for in Cincinnati or the world?
Really i want to do a wedding in Greece where the colors are white, blue and bright pops of color. I love color.
If you could design any celebrity wedding (past, present or future), who would be the lucky couple?
Really each couple of mine is a celebrity in my mind. Each one means the word to me as they have chosen to have me be a part of their day to create the beginning of what is to come. However, I think my 30th will be like a celebrity couple’s wedding in December. I cannot wait to tie in the copper, platinum, emerald green and ivory together.
What’s the biggest lesson you’ve learned, and would pass along to other new wedding wedding professionals just getting started?
Patience, listen to your couples and what they want. Be honest with them if it is going to take 12 weeks to get their designs over then let them know. Don’t over book and think you can do it all. Find your passion, desire and heart and follow it. I get asked all the time are you a planner too. The answer is simply NO i am not that organized. I am a creative and disorganized artist who brings a vision to life.
My opinion for those couples watching the news.
Turn it off and talk to each other. We are in a whole new world right now where the end of the world feels like it could be tomorrow. If you are a bride who has to reschedule your wedding day, know that weddings can happen any day of the week. Sure weekends are great but just imagine a midsummer weekday wedding where the guests are surrounding you with love and joy and it is those who mean the most to you that are there. Your ceremony can still begin at 5:30 p.m. You can still celebrate till 10:30 p.m., and your guests can still go home and sleep like they normally would for work the next day. But i can guarantee you, after the last month of our lives, they are going to want to just take that mini vacation you just planned with them and celebrate with you. Don’t be afraid to be outside the norm. And most of all, no matter what, serve a Corona beer to your guests and toast to surviving the worst pandemic of the world!
